Safety tips for bike riders

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2022 | Car Accidents

Riding a bike for fun, exercise or as your main form of transportation offers many benefits. While this is true, cyclists are also at an increased risk for serious accidents and injuries.

Due to the risk cyclists face, it’s wise to take additional steps to stay safe while riding. This is true for cyclists of all ages.

Always wear a helmet

According to Connecticut law, all children under the age of 12 are required to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. Additionally, businesses that rent bicycles must provide a helmet to renters under the age of 16. While others aren’t required by law to wear a helmet, doing so helps to reduce the risk of serious head trauma if an accident occurs.

Inspect the bike before you ride

It’s important to make sure there are no issues with your bicycle before you depart for a ride. This includes checking the tires to ensure they are properly inflated and making sure there aren’t any broken parts or components that may malfunction. Be sure to check the brakes, as well.

Wear clothing that makes it easier to see you

Take steps to ensure that drivers see you. This includes wearing bright clothing and using reflectors in some way. Also, remember that just because you can see a vehicle doesn’t mean the driver can see you.

Protecting your legal rights after a bicycle accident

If you are involved in a bicycle accident, you have rights. One right is to recover compensation for your injuries and losses. It’s best to work with a legal professional if you find yourself in this situation to ensure you receive the compensation you deserve.
