How prevalent is underage drunk driving?

When it comes to drunk driving, drivers belonging to all age groups may at some point decide get behind the wheel after having one too many. This can lead to serious consequences, but it is important to keep in mind the consequences of a DUI can be particularly challenging for some people. For example, teens who are pulled over and charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol may see their lives (and futures) unravel in various ways. As a result, it is pivotal to talk to your teen about drunk driving or, if you are under the age of 21, be aware of zero tolerance laws and pay special attention to this issue when you get in a car with your friends.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a survey that was conducted in 2017 found that six percent of students in high school had driven after consuming alcohol in the previous 30 days. Moreover, 17 percent had ridden in a vehicle with a driver who was under the influence of alcohol in the last 30 days. This study also found that 30 percent of teens in this group had consumed alcohol in the last 30 days.

Teens may drive while drunk for a number of reasons. Some may be pressured by their peers to get in the car after drinking, while others may not realize that due to zero tolerance laws, they can be charged with drunk driving even though they have a very small amount of alcohol in their system.
