What are signs of nursing home abuse or neglect?

While you expect Connecticut nursing homes to provide top-quality care to your loved one, it’s unfortunately true that some facilities are not what they seem. As a result, it’s important for you to be aware of common red flags so you can address any issues as soon as they arise. In order to help you do this, NextAvenue.com offers the following advice on signs of a neglectful or abusive nursing home.

Poor nutrition

If your loved one has issues with mobility, nursing home staff will be responsible for providing food and drink. If these services are lacking, poor nutrition can have significant health effects, especially for those with chronic illnesses or other issues. Lack of nutritious food may result from inadequate staff or issues with management. Staff may also be unable to deal with residents who are reluctant to eat, which can stem from physical and mental health issues.

Injuries

While injuries may result from time to time, if your loved one is constantly presenting with bruises and cuts there could be a more serious issue at play. Staff may not be doing their jobs correctly, which leads to seniors harming themselves. It could also be an issue of abuse, which has both physical and mental effects on residents. If you suspect abuse, be sure to speak with management immediately to get your loved one to safety.

Issues with personal hygiene

Staff will also be responsible for bathing, changing clothes, and grooming tasks for those who are incapable. If you notice your relative’s hygiene is deteriorating it could be a sign that the staff is not performing their duties as necessary. Bad hygiene can impact a person’s health, especially if he or she has a diminished immune disorder.
