How many crashes are single-vehicle accidents?

When people think about a car crash, they may picture two vehicles colliding with each other, such as a head-on collision or one car slamming into the side of another vehicle. While many of these accidents do occur, it is very important for drivers to be aware that many lives have been lost and countless people have been hurt due to single-vehicle accidents. Moreover, you may find yourself in a single-car accident because of someone else’s negligence, even if they were not involved in the collision.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration states that in 2016, 22 percent of all deadly accidents were single-vehicle crashes. It is important to realize that these statistics include non-motorized vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. Furthermore, single-vehicle wrecks accounted for 14 percent of all traffic accidents which caused injuries over the course of 2016.

Sometimes, single-vehicle wrecks happen solely because of the driver’s carelessness, which draws attention to the importance of safe driving and responsible behavior behind the wheel. In other cases, a single-vehicle wreck may happen because someone riding in another vehicle caused the driver to lose control. Moreover, a pedestrian or bicyclist may cause a driver to veer off of the road.

Some people may think that a single-vehicle crash is less likely to result in an injury or death. However, these statistics show just how many single-vehicle accidents result in the loss of life and injuries. Drivers may slam into trees at high speeds, fall off of an overpass or find themselves involved in another type of terrifying crash.
