Does working night shifts increase the risk of a crash?

From intoxication to the use of a cell phone, there are many different situations in which a motor vehicle crash may be more likely. However, a lot of drivers may not realize that the likelihood of a crash can be increased by many other factors, such as the time and duration of one’s shift at work. If you regularly work night shifts or only work during the night occasionally, it is crucial to be vigilant when you drive to work or return home and understand the potential risks associated with working certain shifts.

Information that was published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s website draws attention to some of the negative consequences associated with working long hours and night shifts. Aside from poorer performance at work and dissatisfaction with one’s job, research shows that working overnight can make a motor vehicle accident more likely when someone is heading to or from work. In fact, excessive work hours and night shifts have been identified as one of the five leading factors of an increased accident risk by those with expertise in drowsy driving. Moreover, a 2011 survey found that ten percent of nurses claimed to have been involved in a traffic wreck related to shift work or fatigue.

These accidents shatter lives and pose a risk to others on the road as well. It is very important for drivers to be aware of the threats they face when they get behind the wheel and any factor that could make them more likely to crash.
