High wind and its hazard to truckers

Truck drivers in Connecticut have a lot of responsibility on the road because accidents involving the large vehicles can result in more catastrophic outcomes. High wind gusts can happen in certain weather conditions, and drivers need to practice extra caution in order to prevent unnecessary accidents.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, high winds can result in trucks losing control quickly. When drivers find themselves in these conditions, there are a number of things they can do. One is to make sure all exposed items and doors are properly secured. There should also be extra room in between trucks and other vehicles on the road so if something does happen, the damage is minimized. Driving the proper speed is also important. Although all speed limits should be followed, it is smart to reduce speed when it is gusty.

CDL Life News discusses additional safety considerations that should be followed in windy conditions. These include:

  • Paying attention to load weight - an empty trailer, or one carrying a lighter load, is more apt to get caught by a gust of wind and tip over
  • Knowing the signs of a potential tornado - depending on the area of the country, there may be a high tornado risk and drivers should look out for hail, dark skies, high-screeching sounds and funnel clouds
  • Pulling over for safety - seek a safe place to park if the conditions are too much to handle
  • Gearing down - gearing down can improve power when driving in crosswinds
  • Sacrificing deadlines - reaching a deadline should never come before safety, so do not be afraid to wait out a storm or windy conditions if you feel it is the smart move
