Dangerous dog breeds and how to prevent attack

Dogs in Connecticut are responsible for a variety of bites and other serious, sometimes fatal, injuries. While any dog can become aggressive if feeling in danger, there are certain breeds that are responsible for the majority of attacks. Being aware of these breeds, and knowing what to do if danger lurks, can help prevent many unfortunate events from occurring.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, the dog breeds that are most commonly associated with serious bite injuries are pit bull types, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, mixed breeds and the Jack Russell Terrier. The AVMA also points out that some smaller breeds tend to be more aggressive but, because of their size, usually inflict less serious injuries. These dogs include toy breeds, collies and spaniels.

While practicing care when around these dogs is important, there are specific things one can do to prevent an attack from occurring. The Humane Society of the United States recommends first to take stock in the surroundings and recognize signs of aggravation. These include an intense stare, a stiff tail, flattened ears, tense body and a brow that is furrowed. If any of these are observed, the following actions should be practiced to avoid attack:

  • Stay still and stand in a relaxed position, with arms by the side
  • Avoid eye contact with the dog and DO NOT turn and run away
  • Start backing away with care once the dog has moved on or lost interest
  • If one lands on the ground for any reason, a curled position should be assumed, keeping still and quiet
  • If attacked, one should give the dog anything close by, such as a piece of clothing, purse or bag

Following these guidelines can greatly reduce the incidents of dog bites or other injuries.
