How many young workers die in traffic crashes?

For young adults and teenage workers, going to work can be dangerous in many ways. However, traffic accidents are a particularly serious concern for younger workers whose job responsibilities include operating a vehicle. In New London, and in other Connecticut cities, it is vital for employers and young workers to realize how problematic this issue is and try to find ways to reduce the likelihood of such an accident occurring.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that traffic accidents claim the lives of more young workers than any other work-related cause. More than 840 young workers between 16 and 24 years old lost their lives in traffic accidents that occurred while they were working, between 2003 and 2010. In fact, younger adults and teen drivers have a higher fatal accident rate in comparison to people from all other age groups.

Sadly, there are various reasons why these fatal wrecks happen. Sometimes, they are the result of a driver’s failure to wear his or her seat belt, while others take place because of poor decisions and inexperience. However, on-the-job traffic accidents may also claim the lives of young workers when because they were being pushed too far or were not trained properly.

For the families of those who pass away, daily life can be daunting. Aside from severe emotional pain, they may also struggle with financial hardships due to medical costs, funeral bills and other reasons. As a result, all options should be explored by victims who survive crashes and the families of those who have passed away.
