Fatigue, fatalities and other truck crash statistics

On a daily basis, far too many Americans are involved in large truck collisions. Tragically, these accidents claim lives, but they also cause permanent injuries and result in many other hardships for victims and their loved ones. In New London, Connecticut, and on roads all over the country, people should realize how prevalent these incidents are and immediately review their options if they are ever involved in a crash.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, more than 3,500 fatal large truck crashes happened in the U.S. over the course of 2015. These deadly collisions were part of the 415,000 large truck accidents reported to authorities during the same year. Fatal truck wrecks were more likely to happen on a weekday and on a rural road. While roughly 25 percent of deadly truck wrecks happened on an interstate highway, about 60 percent took place on rural roads.

The FMCSA reports that truck driver fatigue is among the top 10 causes of large truck collisions. Among 141,000 truck accidents that were assessed as part of a study, an estimated 13 percent of drivers were found to have caused an accident because they suffered from fatigue. Often, truck accidents that occur are preventable and represent an unnecessary loss of life and lifelong injuries. For truck drivers, watching out for all potential risk factors, such as falling asleep at the wheel and poor road conditions, is pivotal. Tragically, these fatal wrecks will likely claim more lives in Connecticut and in all parts of the nation in the years to come.
