Large trucks and brake problems

Whether a bus driver takes to the road under the influence of alcohol or a trucker reaches dangerous speeds, large truck wrecks happen for a myriad of reasons. However, it is important for truck companies and drivers to recognize other truck crash causes, such as brake problems. In New London, Connecticut, large trucks with brake violations pose a serious threat to everyone on the road.

Large truck collisions have various causes, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. For example, motorists are struck by semi trucks because of traffic congestion, speeding, the use of prescription drugs and inclement weather, to name a few. That said, research shows that brake violations and brake failure are a major factor in large truck collisions and that large trucks are far more likely to have brake problems than passenger vehicles.

In one study, researchers examined two-vehicle accidents and found that an estimated two percent of passenger vehicles had brake problems, compared to 27 percent of large trucks. Sadly, large trucks with brake-related issues are particularly dangerous due to the massive size of trucks and the amount of time it takes truck drivers to slow down.

Among more than 400 large trucks that were analyzed after fatal Michigan accidents, over 32 percent were found to have brake issues that would have taken the trucks off of the road if they were inspected prior to the accidents. Sadly, drivers continued to operate these trucks, resulting in fatalities that never should have happened and leaving families with permanent pain.
