Reviewing underage DUI statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a past survey revealed that one out of every 10 teenagers in high school (over the age of 16) admitted to drinking and driving in the previous 30 days. In New London, and cities across the entire state of Connecticut, underage drunk driving is a serious problem that has shattered far too many lives.

Although research reveals that fewer teenagers are drinking and driving when compared to statistics from 1991, the rate of underage DUI remains alarming. Statistics from 2011 show that there were roughly 2.4 million instances of high schoolers getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol each month, on average. Over the course of 2010, alcohol was present in the systems of one out of every five teenaged drivers involved in a deadly auto accident, many of whom were above the legal limit.

While underage drunk driving is a major issue around the country, it is also a significant concern close to home. According to Connecticut's Official State Website, a 2013 survey targeting high schools in Connecticut revealed that over nine percent of students had operated a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Furthermore, over 22 percent had ridden in a vehicle that was driven by someone who was drunk.

From debilitating injuries to lost lives and destroyed futures, drunk driving has devastating consequences that affect people of all ages and from every walk of life. For those who have been hit by a drunk driver, it is essential to focus on recovery and identify the best path forward.
