Reviewing statistics on drowsy driving

Over the course of 2014, over 840 people lost their lives in an auto accident which involved a drowsy driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the NHTSA also states that it is impossible to measure the exact number of drowsy driving accidents that occur. In New London, and across the entire state of Connecticut, drowsy drivers pose a risk to themselves as well as everyone else on the road.

From 2005 to 2009, estimates show that an average of 83,000 traffic accidents involved drowsy driving each year. Furthermore, many crashes are never linked to drowsy driving, since drowsiness is not always detectable. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that drowsiness affects a driver's ability to make the right decision while behind the wheel, slows down their reaction time and makes them more inattentive. Surprisingly, one out of every 25 adult drivers who participated in a telephone survey admitted to falling asleep while behind the wheel during the past 30 days.

Sometimes, drowsy drivers put the lives of others at risk because they haven't had enough sleep or have worked too long. Truck driver fatigue is another major problem that has played a role in many large truck accidents. From serious injuries to fatalities that leave an entire family with permanent emotional pain, wrecks caused by drowsy driving have turned far too many lives upside down. When drivers are too tired to drive safely, it is important for them to understand the risks associated with drowsy driving and stay off of the road.
