Diseases and infections that can come from dog bites

If a person is bitten by a dog, it is important for them to clean the wound immediately and then seek out a medical professional as soon as possible. This is because bites from dogs come with several risks that include diseases, as well as mild to severer infections.

Medscape states that animal bite infections are common if not treated properly. Bite wounds need to be washed and sanitized in order to clean the bacteria out. If not disinfected, dog bites can lead to meningitis, endocarditis, or ocular infection. Sepsis can happen, which is frequently fatal. In some extreme cases, even gangrene may occur, leading to the necessitation of amputation. Pasteurella is a bacterial commonly found in dog bite wounds, which can cause painful inflammation of the bite area and glands. In all of these cases, people with lowered immunity can face more severe issues.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list out a number of diseases that can be contracted through a dog’s bite. This includes tetanus, which can cause paralysis, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a Staph infection that can be fatal. The most famous disease that can be passed on through dog bites is rabies, which can remain undetected for months and is almost always fatal by the time symptoms begin to show. However, it is actually rare for a person to contract rabies from a dog in the United States.

In order to prevent a dog bite sufferer from having to deal with these issues, proper and speedy treatment of the bite wound is absolutely imperative.
