Injuries caused by dog attacks

Connecticut victims of dog attacks know that sometimes, the bite itself may not be the worst injury. In fact, it may not even be the only injury. There are numerous other complications that can arise from a dog attack after the bite itself has occurred.

First of all, Medicine Net states that infection is a serious risk when it comes to dog bites. Someone who is attacked by a dog should clean their injuries immediately, even before going to see a doctor if possible. This is because the bacteria in a dog’s mouth can transfer to the human through the open wound, causing complications such as fever, swelling, redness and puffiness. Infections can also decrease the rate of healing, which makes an injury take longer to close up. This can also increase the possibility of the bite scarring over.

WiseGeek states that bites are categorized by how extreme they are. Most bites are considered minor, even if the skin is broken. These injuries should be cleaned immediately but usually only require antibiotic ointment and bandages in order for the wound to heal properly.

Severe bites, on the other hand, could require stitches or even surgery. These are deep bites that penetrate through the skin and down into the muscle. In some cases, the dog’s teeth may even hit bone, causing further damage. Depending on the severity of the attack, sometimes broken bones may also occur. These cases can be extremely traumatic to the victim, especially since the recovery period can last a long time.
