Report: Lane departure causes the most Connecticut traffic deaths

Drinking and driving simply do not mix well. At Beebe and O’Neil, our attorneys have seen firsthand how devastating these accidents can be. Our goal is to help you understand what your options are following an accident, including seeking compensation for damages.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, several key ways to spot a drunk driver include the following:

  • A car that is moving in and out of lanes
  • A car that is weaving among other vehicles
  • A car that is straddling the center lane
  • A car that is on the wrong side of the road

MADD points out that a drunk driver might also appear to almost strike other objects or drive essentially anywhere other than where the car should be.

This type of behavior is inherently dangerous, and the statistics support that. Recently, the Auto Insurance Center took a look at National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data regarding fatal accidents. Researchers evaluated the behaviors that led to traffic deaths, such as careless driving, failure to yield, making improper turns or failing to adjust driving based on environmental factors.

In Connecticut and in dozens of other states across the country, failing to maintain a lane emerged as the leading factor behind these accidents. In addition to drunk driving, other reasons a driver could leave his or her lane is due to a distraction, such as texting behind the wheel, or driving drowsy.

In any case, if you have been adversely affected because of a drunk or otherwise irresponsible driver, you do have the right to take legal action. For more information on this topic, please visit our page on DUI accidents.
