Trucks shut down Connecticut highway after serious crashes

The sheer size of a tractor-trailer gives it an ominous presence on the highway. Many drivers in Connecticut may even feel a little weary of sharing the road with an 18-wheeler. Stories of truck driver fatigue and inattention behind the wheel are all too common and illustrate what can happen when these vehicles cause a crash. Unfortunately, a recent incident on Interstate 95 demonstrates that very point.

Early one morning in the middle of August, a truck caught fire near exit 70 on the highway. It had been headed south when it crossed over the line onto the right shoulder of the road. The Cottrell Tuck Lines, Inc., vehicle struck the guardrail and the bridge support, scattering debris across the road. The truck driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Just a little more than hour later, a fatal accident occurred in the northbound lane in the same area. A responder at the scene said the crash looked like “cars on top of cars” after five cars and two tractor-trailers collided. Several people sustained life-threatening injuries, and one person was killed.

Connecticut police officers are investigating to try to determine the causes of both incidents. In addition to the interstate shutting down temporarily, many lives will be forever altered as a result of these crashes. People who have been seriously injured or who have lost a loved one as a result of a truck accident should consult with an attorney to see if filing a claim against the responsible party would be appropriate.
