What do you need to do after a car accident?

| May 22, 2015 | Car Accidents

If you’ve been in a car accident, gathering evidence and contacting insurance companies might be the last thing on your mind. This will be a highly emotional and confusing time for you and others involved. However, it’s important to understand that after an accident in New London, you will need to take several steps to ensure your best interests are protected.

An article by U.S. News has listed the most important steps to take after a car crash. These include the following:

  • After pulling over to a safe spot, call 911 even if the crash was minor. Authorities say that calling emergency services is the fastest and most effective way to get an officer to your location and to get medical help if you need it.
  • If you are able, take pictures of the accident including the damage to both vehicles and any injuries. This can be used as evidence later in a car accident claim and can protect you if the other side accuses you of being at fault.
  • Even if you think you were at fault, do not admit this to the other party and especially not to insurance agencies. Only discuss fault with your attorney.
  • Talk to other witnesses at the scene and get their contact information. This will be useful later when talking to police, your attorney and insurance companies.

If you are injured, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention even if you think your injuries are not too bad. Serious injuries can show up days or even weeks later. This information should not be taken as legal advice.
