Man gets restraining order for aggressive dog, files appeal

Devastating and tragic dog attacks regularly show up in headlines in Connecticut and the rest of the country, but it seems that many dog owners remain oblivious to the damage that their pets can cause to innocent people. An animal attack can result in serious injuries or even death. It is vitally important for dog owners to take the proper precautions to protect others from dog bites, including getting obedience training, using a leash in public and restraining an animal that is known to be aggressive. Unfortunately, some owners either refuse to protect others or don't think their beloved pet can be dangerous.

At the end of this month, a man from Darien will attend a hearing to appeal a restraining order that was placed on his German Shepherd after the dog attacked a woman at Waveny Park in New Canaan. According to the police report, the dog jumped at the woman as she was walking on a trail in the park in June 2014, causing numerous injuries to her arm, including 3-inch gashes, bruises and abrasions.

The restraining order requires the dog owner to keep his pet in the state, to put a muzzle on it while off his property, to use a leash no longer than six feet and to keep the dog at least 10 feet away from other people. Additionally, the owner’s PIN to access the Spencer’s Run dog park was removed. The man claims the restraining order’s terms are excessive.

The outcome of this case remains to be seen. However, victims who receive a serious injury due to a dog bite may wish to consider taking legal action against the owner of an aggressive animal.
