Connecticut man enters not guilty plea in motorcycle accident

A 71-year-old man entered a not guilty plea to charges of negligent vehicular homicide stemming from a June traffic accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist. The Stamford incident occurred on Harvard Avenue.

That is where the 71-year-old man, who was driving a Ford Explorer Sport Trac, allegedly made a left turn in the path of a motorcycle. The impact of the resulting collision propelled the 48-year-old motorcyclist off of his bike, authorities said. Consequently, the motorcyclist suffered a broken neck and other injuries, from which he would later die. The 48-year-old man was reportedly driving home from work when the accident occurred.

The 71-year-old man had misjudged the distance of the motorcyclist when he turned left, according to a police report. According to officials, skid marks linked to the motorcycle indicate that the motorcyclist had applied the brakes just before the collision. Officials also noted that the motorcyclist was wearing proper safety equipment at the time of the accident.

Besides criminal penalties, the 71-year-old man in this case may also face civil action. For, people may be held liable for a car accident in civil court if their negligence proves to be a contributing factor in the fatal wreck. By filing a wrongful death claim against the at-fault party, families of fatal accident victims may recover the various expenses connected with a loved one's death, such as funeral bills and other end-of-life costs. That is why many bereaved families seek the counsel of a personal injury lawyer during the aftermath of a fatal accident. The attorney may review the specific circumstances of the accident and advise claimants how much they should seek in damages.
