Crossing guard injured in auto-pedestrian crash

Crossing guards charged with the responsibility of keeping children safe as they cross the street may regularly encounter angry and impatient drivers while doing their jobs. One crossing guard in Connecticut was reportedly taken to the hospital on Sept. 12 for treatment of serious injuries, including broken bones, when she was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk near an elementary school.

Police say the 52-year-old woman was performing her crossing guard duties when she was struck by a vehicle being driven by a 24-year-old woman. The driver, who stopped at the accident scene, told police she had been blinded by the glare of the sun. She now faces numerous charges including driving without a license or registration, misuse of plates, failing to yield the right-of-way and failing to stop for the crossing guard.

Under Connecticut law, drivers are required to yield when pedestrians are present in crosswalks, even when they have the green light. In an accident such as this, the investigation to determine liability for the crash may include a reconstruction of the accident at the time of day when it happened to test visibility conditions.

Once liability has been established, a car accident victim who suffered significant injuries and economic losses may be able to pursue compensation from the liable party. The costs of emergency, medical and recuperative care, as well as the value of lost wages and diminished earning ability, are losses victims may wish to pursue in a personal injury claim.
