State police say that a woman was killed and another was seriously injured in a deadly accident in New Haven. The crash, involving a passenger car and two tractor-trailer trucks, happened on Interstate 95 at about 5:15 a.m. on Aug. 27. The southbound lanes were closed during the morning rush hour as a result.

Following a preliminary investigation, police determined that a 2002 Oldsmobile was behind a tractor-trailer truck when the commercial vehicle stopped suddenly for construction. The 53-year-old female driver of the car stopped, but the yellow tractor-trailer truck following her could not. The large vehicle ran into the rear of the Oldsmobile, sending it into the rear of the first truck.

Along with Connecticut State Police, New Haven Fire Service and EMS responded to the truck accident. The Oldsmobile driver and her 41-year-old female passenger had to be extricated from the car. While the passenger suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized at Yale New Haven Hospital, the driver of the car died at the scene. The drivers of the trucks were reportedly unharmed.

Tractor-trailers are likely to cause severe and fatal accidents on highways due to their size and speed. When people are injured in truck accidents, they could seek compensation for the damages that they suffered. This might include reimbursement for medical care, lost wages and rehabilitation. If their injuries make them disabled and unable to work, the victims may receive compensation that pays for the loss of future wages.

When people die in truck accidents, the surviving family members could also seek compensation for damages. This might allow them to recover the cost of funerals and the loss of the decedents’ earning capacity. An attorney may be able to help a family determine the negligent parties, potentially including the at-fault driver as well as the trucking company.
