22 children treated after 5-vehicle crash in Connecticut

On June 10, several people were hospitalized following a traffic accident in Torrington that involved five vehicles, including two school buses. According to authorities, the accident occurred on Winsted Road at approximately 4 p.m.

Authorities said that 22 students were taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for evaluation following the incident. However, none suffered serious injuries, and all of them were composed and collected by the time police officers arrived at the scene, authorities reported.

Reportedly, a 52-year-old man was driving a pickup truck when he rear-ended a Jeep, initiating a chain-reaction crash that involved a Kindercare bus, a Torrington Public Schools bus and a fifth vehicle. Authorities stated that the driver of the Jeep, a 40-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries in the accident. She was reportedly airlifted to Hartford Hospital. The 52-year-old driver of the truck suffered a broken sternum, authorities said.

According to police, the accident is still under investigation. However, police said that it appeared the driver of the pickup truck suffered a medical episode prior to hitting the Jeep and that it is unlikely he will face charges.

Even if police do not file criminal charges in connection with the incident, one of the parties involved in the crash may be held accountable in civil court. That is because people who suffer damages in auto accidents may pursue civil action if there is evidence indicating that another driver's negligence caused the crash.

Not all accident-related injuries reveal themselves in full immediately following the accident. The extent of some injuries does not become manifest until days or even weeks later. When people pursue civil action, such as a personal injury claim, in the aftermath of a car accident, they might seek restitution for damages related to their injuries. These damages may include hospital bills, medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and even lost wages.
