Snowy sidewalk may have been factor in fatal pedestrian accident

As part of an investigation into a fatal pedestrian accident in Manchester, Connecticut, police are working to determine whether a snow-covered sidewalk may have been a factor in the collision. According to police, a 53-year-old man was fatally hit by a vehicle as he pushed a shopping cart along the street.

In Manchester, residents have 24 hours to clear snow from the sidewalks after a snow storm has ended. In this case, a snow storm had ended on a Wednesday afternoon, and the pedestrian accident happened on a Thursday evening. It is suspected that the victim may have been in the road to get around a sidewalk covered in snow.

Police went on to say that intoxication and speed did not appear to be factors in the crash.

Connecticut residents should know that liability for an auto accident may extend beyond the drivers on the road. In general, the establishment of liability involves showing that a person or business failed to exercise reasonable caution to protect the well-being of another. For example, property owners can be held liable if their failure to clean a sidewalk or repair a parking lot leads to another person's injuries or death.

Particularly complex liability claims may involve multiple negligent parties, and insurance companies for defendants and plaintiffs are notorious for going to great lengths to minimize coverage for a victim's injuries.

When the negligence on the part of a driver or property owner leads to a person's death, then the family of the victim may take legal action in the form of a wrongful death claim. This sort of claim is meant to provide monetary relief when a loved one's death has left a family with financial burdens.
